Whirling Dervish Ceremony
The Whirling Dervish is a member of the Mevlevi Order, a Sufi Muslim group founded in the 13th century by the poet and theologian Rumi. The Mevlevi Order is also known as the Order of the Whirling Dervishes, and its members are known for performing a dance called the sema, which involves spinning in place as a form of dhikr, or remembrance of God. This dance is performed as part of a religious ceremony and is said to be a way for the dervishes to achieve a state of spiritual ecstasy with God. Whirling dervishes are found primarily in Turkey, and the ceremony is open to anyone regardless of religion or background.
