Ihlara Valley, whose name is Peristremma in historical sources, with its vegetation, churches, and chapels; is one of the rare areas where nature, history, art, and cultural phenomena come together.
Ihlara Valley was formed by the effects of wind, floods, and many natural events after the volcanic layer formed as a result of the eruption of Hasandag Volcano centuries ago, and the erosion of the Melendiz Stream. Due to the Melendiz River flowing along the steep slopes of the canyon, the people who lived in the region in the past took the name "People of the Rotating Water" that is, "Peristremma." The Melendiz River was the main reason for the existence of life here and played a leading role in the formation of this fascinating canyon. This magnificent canyon, whose height is up to 120 meters, continues its journey from Ihlara Town to Selimiye. In the northwest direction, it turns to the wide valley where Selime Town, Yaprakhisar, Belisirma Villages, and Ziga Spa are located, and from there to Salt Lake. The valley, which contains many mysteries of formation, has no shore. It is an area where the Mediterranean climate is experienced in the area where the continental climate is dominant.
There are many churches and historical sites within the 14-kilometer valley. This magnificent beauty, where you can find many traces of the people who lived here in its time, see the monasteries carved by human hands, and witness the fairy chimneys. This is an area that is visited by tourists coming to Cappadocia and is flooded with visitors every year. Every year, thousands of tourists from many countries around the world come to see the Ihlara Valley. The peace will cover you as soon as you enter the valley with Melendiz Stream in the middle; accompanied by the wonderful sounds of water, birds, and insects. There is no other sound you can hear other than your own footsteps and if you went in the afternoon. A more lively Ihlara Valley welcomes its visitors in the early hours of the day.
